Talking with one of our homeless residents who lives in one of the “tent cities” within the county was one of the reasons why we came up with the idea of creating a Mobile Shower Bus. This person who rides the local bus to keep cool and stay out of the elements, told of how he was brought to tears when he overheard some people on the bus talking about how bad he smelled. This made us want to do something to bring dignity back to this man, despite his living conditions. After doing some research to see if it had been done before, we decided to bring this effort to our county.
The goal is to raise enough money to build a mobile shower bus. The bus will be retrofitted with multiple shower units (depending on the type of bus) and used to give homeless people a place to shower and freshen up on routine basis. Another use for the mobile shower bus could be to assist those families or communities that have been displaced by natural disasters.
This is a major initiative but with the help of local agencies, nonprofits, churches, Charles County residents, and local businesses we believe that we can not only turn this into a reality, but once we acquire the bus, we will be able to retrofit and sustain this initiative.
